JAKE HAD THOUGHT THROUGH Mary’s offer all night after he and Cruise returned to his seventh-floor condo. His home was so sterile, so gray and cold after the warmth of Sunflower Acres.

Today he and Cruise sat across from Mary in the Shotgun Diner, ready to make an offer on the house. He couldn’t keep his mind on business, though. The fact was, Mary did a lot to warm him up. He felt drawn to her, he drank her in, like crops did sunshine. When he was around Mary, he felt certain that the winter he’d known in his life might be gone for good.

His dilemma was actually simple. She was going to leave, and it was only a matter of time before she found another buyer. Since Cruise liked being at Sunflower Acres so much, he should probably stop focusing on the fact that Mary wouldn’t be there and just draw up a contract. That would make two happy people, Cruise and Mary.

Sitting across the table from her, he wondered why it was so hard to negotiate for her house. He would have paid the moon to have her. Knowing how important it was to her to be able to move toward putting in her final time toward her medical training, he swallowed back his feelings.

“This is harder than I thought it would be,” she said, an uncertain smile on her face. “I know I’m doing the right thing. I’m lucky to be able to sell to someone who wants the whole thing, lock, stock and barrel.” Mary sighed, sparkly tears starting to fill her eyes. “It’s not a matter of money. I can’t see the practicality of hanging on to a home where none of us will live, yet I think it’s going to break my heart to say goodbye to the place my family lived.”

He hardly knew what to say to that. Somehow, he felt like the Big Bad Wolf when he meant to be a Knight in Shining Armor. Maybe it was best to change the subject for a while—Mary appeared to be on the brink of tears and he couldn’t bear to see her cry. “So. I’ve never asked what kind of doctor you’re going to be.”

“Oh,” she said, all sniffly. “A pediatrician.”

“A pediatrician. Now that fully explains why you don’t see a reason to stay in Sunflower. No children to make well.”

She smiled a bit. “Well, there’d be Cruise. Aren’t you going to mind him not having playmates?”

He was glad to see the smile light her face. “Not right away. He and I need to get to know each other. Maybe by the time he’s school-age Kitty will have snared some van-driving families to move out here.”

“What made you come out to Sunflower Junction anyway? It’s not exactly a thriving bedroom community.”

He shrugged. “I wanted a peaceful area. Land where Cruise can run and play.” Ruffling the little boy’s hair, he said, “I’d like to have grown up in a smaller town myself.”

“So it’s your dream.
